Water Stains, Wood Rot & "Mill Glaze"

"The main cause of wood rot is the presence of moisture from direct exposure to the elements. Sometimes from condensation, lack of ventilation, or excessive temperature fluctuation. The other main problem is the wood grain. Most lumber used in construction of shingles, clapboard or trim boards comes sanded or polished on one side and rough or unfinished on the other side.
In the mill, if the lumber is still wet when sanded, they create what we call "mill glaze". This is a shiny and smooth surface that does not allow the primer to bond with the wood fibers. These surfaces, and all wood extremities, must be sanded to open the grain and improve adhesion of the primer." - Serlio Araujo
